    Dark Matter in B-L Extended MSSM Models

    We analyze the dark matter problem in the context of supersymmetric U(1)_{B-L} model. In this model, the lightest neutalino can be the B-L gaugino widetilde {Z}_{B-L} or the extra Higgsinos widetilde{chi}_{1,2} dominated. We compute the thermal relic abundance of these particles and show that, unlike the LSP in MSSM, they can account for the observed relic abundance with no conflict with other phenomenological constraints. The prospects for their direct detection, if they are part of our galactic halo, are also discussed.Comment: 11 pages, 9 figures. Published versio

    Organic production systems in Northern highbush blueberries

    The production of highbush blueberries is increasing worldwide. Organic production of blueberries in Sweden is presently very limited but is expected to have a great potential to expand as the berries are popular and have a good shelf life. The fact that blueberries require acid soils raises several questions concerning suitable substrates in combination with mycorrhizal inoculation and fertilization in organic production systems. Field and pot experiments have been established during 2011 and 2012 with the aim of developing a sustainable production system for high quality organic blueberries. After the second experimental year, total fruit yields were similar for plants grown in a plastic tunnel and in the open field. Yields were not affected by the addition of 10% forest soil to the peat-based substrate. Inoculation with ericoid mycorrhizal fungi had little effect on shoot length in a greenhouse pot experiment. Blueberries may be particularly suitable for organic production as the need for fertilizers is low combined with a relatively low disease pressure on the blueberry crop in the Nordic countries. The Swedish blueberry production might be expected to expand in the near future. The development of a successful and resource-efficient growing system for organic blueberries may encourage new blueberry growers to chose organic production

    SUSY R parity violation and CP asymmetry in semi-leptonic tau-decays

    We analyze the CP violation in the semileptonic | \Delta S|=1 tau-decays in supersymmetric extensions of the standard model (SM) with R parity violating term. We show that the CP asymmetry of tau-decay is enhanced significantly and the current experimental limits obtained by CLEO collaborations can be easily accommodated. We argue that observing CP violation in semi leptonic tau-decay would be a clear evidence for R-parity violating SUSY extension of the SM.Comment: 5 pages, 2 figure

    Bound on Z' Mass from CDMS II in the Dark Left-Right Gauge Model II

    With the recent possible signal of dark matter from the CDMS II experiment, the Z' mass of a new version of the dark left-right gauge model (DLRM II) is predicted to be at around a TeV. As such, it has an excellent discovery prognosis at the operating Large Hadron Collider.Comment: 11 page

    Dark Matter Annihilation and the PAMELA, FERMI and ATIC Anomalies

    If dark matter (DM) annihilation accounts for the tantalizing excess of cosmic ray electron/positrons, as reported by the PAMELA, ATIC, HESS and FERMI observatories, then the implied annihilation cross section must be relatively large. This results, in the context of standard cosmological models, in very small relic DM abundances that are incompatible with astrophysical observations. We explore possible resolutions to this apparent conflict in terms of non-standard cosmological scenarios; plausibly allowing for large cross sections, while maintaining relic abundances in accord with current observations.Comment: 13 pages, 3 figures; published for publication in Physical Review

    Maternal haemodynamic function differs in pre‐eclampsia when it is associated with a small‐for‐gestational‐age newborn: a prospective cohort study

    Objective To describe maternal haemodynamic differences in gestational hypertension with small‐for‐gestational‐age babies (HDP + SGA), gestational hypertension with appropriate‐for‐gestational‐age babies (HDP‐only) and control pregnancies. Design Prospective cohort study. Setting Tertiary Hospital, UK. Population Women with gestational hypertension and healthy pregnant women. Methods Maternal haemodynamic indices were measured using a non‐invasive Ultrasound Cardiac Output Monitor (USCOM‐1A®) and corrected for gestational age and maternal characteristics using device‐specific reference ranges. Main outcome measures Maternal cardiac output, stroke volume, systemic vascular resistance. Results We included 114 HDP + SGA, 202 HDP‐only and 401 control pregnancies at 26–41 weeks of gestation. There was no significant difference in the mean arterial blood pressure (110 versus 107 mmHg, P = 0.445) between the two HDP groups at presentation. Pregnancies complicated by HDP + SGA had significantly lower median heart rate (76 versus 85 bpm versus 83 bpm), lower cardiac output (0.85 versus 0.98 versus 0.97 MoM) and higher systemic vascular resistance (1.4 versus 1.0 versus 1.2 MoM) compared with control and HDP‐only pregnancies, respectively (all P < 0.05). Conclusion Women with HDP + SGA present with more severe haemodynamic dysfunction than HDP‐only. Even HDP‐only pregnancies exhibit impaired haemodynamic indices compared with normal pregnancies, supporting a role of the maternal cardiovascular system in gestational hypertension irrespective of fetal size. Central haemodynamic changes may play a role in the pathogenesis of pre‐eclampsia and should be considered alongside placental aetiology

    B -> K pi Puzzle and New Sources of CP Violation in Supersymmetry

    The difference between the CP asymmetries of the B0K+πB^0 \to K^+ \pi^- and B+K+π0B^+ \to K^+ \pi^0 decays has been recently confirmed with an evidence larger than 5σ5\sigma's. We discuss it as a possible signal of new physics associated with new (large) CP violation in the electroweak penguin contributions. We propose a supersymmetry breaking scheme where such new sources of CP violation occur in the flavor non-universal trilinear scalar couplings.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figure

    The construction of time, place and society in 21st century American dystopia fiction: a corpus linguistics analysis of deixis

    With the challenges of the 21st century, there seems to be an urgent need to reflect more on the way literature constructs the world for the sensitive age group of young adults. In this vein, the present paper is an attempt to investigate the way time, place and society are linguistically portrayed for young adults in the interesting literary genre of dystopia science fiction. This attempt is the track that the paper pursues to find out why and how the young adult readers get so indulged with the world of dystopia science fiction. The young adult seems to reconstruct the dystopic science fiction temporal, special and social atmosphere with the aid of language. Thus, there must be a certain linguistic structure for the construction of the three vital elements of the world (time, place and society) in this literary genre. To achieve its aims, the paper combines the concept of deixis with Werth’s (1999) Text World Theory. For more precise results, the corpus linguistics tools of concordance and frequency are employed by using Anthony’s (2019) AntConc software. The data consists of eight young adult dystopia science fiction works; Suzanne Collins’ The Hunger Games Trilogy (2008-2010) (a series of three novels) and James Dashner’s The Maze Runner (2009- 2016) (a series of five novels)

    3-Diazo-1,4-Diphenyl-4-Hydroxy-2-Butanone: Preparation and Reactions

    The recent reports of intramolecular Aldol, Dieckman and alkyla- 16 21 tion reactions of diazomethyl ketones by Burkoth and Woolsey have demonstrated that under proper conditions diazomethyl ketones will undergo normal base-catalyzed reactions. Similar intermolecular condensation reactions of diazomethyl ketones, however, have apparently not been in-, vestigated . The purpose of the present work was to investigate the possibility of intermolecular base-catalyzed alkylation and aldol-type condensations of diazomethyl ketones of the type RCH^COCHN^ . The reactions of the hydroxydiazo ketone adducts resulting from aldol condensation and which are generally not available, would also be of interest. The initial work with l-diazo-2-butanone (3 5) and benzaldehyde revealed that condensation took place preferentially at the diazo carbon to give 2-diazo- 1-hydroxy-l-phenyl-3-pentanone (4 1) as a viscous liquid. However, further work on this compound was abandoned in favor of l-diazo-3-phenyl-2-propanone (36). When diazo ketone 3_6 was treated with benzaldehyde, the condensation once again occurred at the diazo carbon and resulted in the formation of 3-diazo-l,4-diphenyl-4-hydroxy-2-butanone (42). Irradiation of the hydroxydiazo ketone 42_ in benzene or methanol below 50° gave 1,4-diphenyl-1,3-butanedione (43) . The dione 43 was also the only product isolated from the pyrolysis of 42. in refluxing chlorobenzene Treatment of the hydroxydiazo ketone 42. with hydrogen chloride gas gave 20% of the dione 43. and 31% of 3-chloro-l, 4-diphenyl-4- hydroxy-2-butanone (44). Similarly when treated with hydrogen bromide gas, 42. gave 10% of the dione 43. and 45% of 3-bromo-l, 4-diphenyl-4- hydroxy-2-butanone (45). The structures of 44. and 45. rests on the physical data and the reduction of 45. to 2-bromo-1,4-diphenyl-1,3-butanediol (49).
